Now Thats What I Call Dicksquad

DICKSQUAD is an underground collective of producers from the thriving US Trap/Hyphy/Club music scene. Currently focused within the Baltimore and Washington D.C. areas of Maryland, this unique party crew has created a brand around what they call “Dick Music”. “Dick Music” is the process of either producing an original track or remixing around the ever-so-popular club music one shot vocal sample, “dick”. Although this may sound like somewhat of a joke to those outside Dicksquad’s loyal fan base, we assure you that this level of implementation has reached far above slapstick musical comedy.

“NOW That’s What I Call DICKSQUAD Volume 1″ is the first EP release from the Dicksquad collective, and it packs quite the punch. 10 tracks of ambitious edits, remixes and originals all approaching the use of the “dick” sample in completely different ways. What we love most about this EP, is it’s ability to show such a wide range within the genres and hybrids Dicksquad has always represented. Everything from hard hitting Club patterns and Trap breakdowns to Future R&B and slightly more down-tempo vibe music can be found in “NOW That’s What I Call DICKSQUAD Volume 1″.

The introductory track on “NOW That’s What I Call DICKSQUAD Volume 1″ comes from Tone Capo. “#DICK” is a fantastic, bass heavy Club/Trap hybrid remix of the “Beverly Hills Cop” theme song. This track is a great example of what Dicksquad is all about. Classic hard-hitting club kicks pound the floor while ambitious sample chopping switches up the movements for the crowd. Dick music at it’s very roots.

“Diq2Day” is a high-energy hybrid of Juke, Hyphy and Hardstyle from RaceCarBed and Thunderbird Juicebox. Starting out with a liquid rave vibe, this track quickly escalates into serious Hyphy. Pounding 808′s lay down thick bass while Juke rims and rising/falling lead synths drive the dance roller-coaster. Of course, your significant other is also constantly being reminded she’s going to get some “dick” today. Which is never a bad thing when grinding it out on the floor together.

“Gurl Gimme Dat” comes to us from Histo. This Baltimore Club banger hits so hard your unborn children are already bouncing to the kicks. This track takes a lot of classic Club influences and meshes them with some highly appropriate synth work. A heavy Trap breakdown separates the thick Club drops just enough to give dancers a chance to breathe, but otherwise “Gurl Gimme Dat” is one made for the sweat-box. By the end of this song, you’ll be lucky to have your pants on in public.

This “dick” remix of Justin Timberlake’s “Suit & Tie” by DJ Rell is quite possibly one of the best tracks we’ve heard in 2013. Rell completely owns every single second of this tune, and there isn’t any better way to describe it. From his phenomenally clean sampling of the original brass sections to the sheer fact that it vividly reminds us of JT doing “Dick in a Box” on SNL, this tune is a global winner. Pitched club pattern bass gives way to a super sexy 20 second interlude at about 1:23, and you had better get her clothes off before it/you start slamming again at 1:51.

What better way to transition from a hot Justin Timberlake remix than to move directly to a Rhianna “Dick Music” remix? Whiskers Po brings us this super vibey Future Club remix of “Birthday Cake”, and it’s eight shades of brilliant. Lofty chords set the mood over soft club kicks and breaks, creating a completely different feel for Rhianna’s vocals. This tune is a great way to add a more melodic tone to your club set. Whiskers Po is a great up and coming producer who never lets our ears down.

Speaking of great up and coming producers, “Beep Beep Dick Rock” by Tanner Caldwell is easily one of the most different sounding tracks on “NOW That’s What I Call DICKSQUAD Volume 1″. This Juke/Footwork/Club hybrid brings what we like to call a more danceable Pogo influence to the table. Highly melodic, technical percussion and super clean vocal sample chops/transposition create a great new way to look at the club pattern underneath. Tanner Caldwell flips this rhythm so many times, and you’ll never catch it during the first listen.

Coming in to bring this EP back to that thick classic club music vibe is DJ Kiff with “Get Up On That Dick”. DJ Kiff works his magic by adding in some airy chord work to offset the hard hitting club percussion. The break down in this track drops the chords to form a more classic chop, but it still completes a coherent sound all the way through. We really enjoy the way Kiff approaches “Get Up On That Dick”. Its melodic style rounds out this EP really well.

Returning back from the land of melody, Tone Capo gives us this hilariously awesome classic club chop, “My Dick is Bigger Than Yours”. The vocal clip is of comedy legend John Witherspoon, but we’re not sure which movie exactly. This track feels as if it was produced in the time honored “Dis Track” method. Anyone who knows the origins of Club Music can attest to the days when new tracks flew out of producers’ minds fueled by drama behind the scenes. Obviously this tune was made to celebrate Dicksquad, but the sentiment is still there. Tone Capo’s “My Dick is Bigger Than Yours” will easily make every man and woman on the dance floor laugh and dance at the same damn time.

“I Want Dick” comes to us from DJ Fade “The Future”. This tune brings a lot of “future” to the table. Beginning with a more Future R&B vibe, the track drops first into a thick club beat. It then breaks into a soft Trap movement for yet another color change, and finishes strong with a completely different club drop than the first. “I Want Dick” does a great job of blending the Future R&B sound with both classic and future Club. Not only does it offer DJ’s the ability to mix out into some more vibey Trap music, but it can also mix very well with Club tracks both old and new.

Last, but certainly not least, Buzz Trillington and Shooter McNappin collaborate to bring us “Ciara Rides the DICKSQUAD”. What better way to listen to Ciara’s silky voice than while accompanied by bed squeaks, saxophone and some smooth Trap? Buzz Trillington and Shooter McNappin put in some great work to update this tune while still keeping it sexy. The “Dick” samples melt into this bootleg almost well enough not to notice them at all. Although, that might be us enjoying the thoughts of “Dick” and Ciara a little too much as well.

“NOW That’s What I Call DICKSQUAD Volume 1″ is, above all else, an extremely solid compilation EP. Not only are these tracks all easily playable live, but they also carry with them the memorable factor sought after by every music producer. This EP gets a 9 out of 10 from us here at Filthy Philly, and the lone point off is simply to push DICKSQUAD to continue pushing the limit.
